Insanity…I often wonder if during the round table discussions about the production of this workout if they new that it was truly going to be as insane as it is? I don’t say that to scare you, but it is an insane workout. I have never seen a workout program that you truly don’t need any equipment for and you can get in as great of shape as you want. All you really need for the Insanity workout are these 5 essentials:

Im going to be 100% honest with you. Once you order Insanity through this site I become your free Team Beachbody Coach. The Insanity Workout is for anyone! Yes it is a challenging workout, but if your 100% committed and ready to get in shape no matter whether you are an absolute beginner and/or over weight or a pro, Insanity is for you. Well that really depends on what you want out of your P90X Workout. I hear some people say, “I don’t want to lose a bunch of weight and be real skinny” or “I don’t want to get all bulky” and most women are worried about looking more masculine instead of lean, toned and sexy.
Let me explain a little by telling you my personal experience. I have always been a small build of a guy. People see me now and say, “well you didn’t really get bigger, you just got cut”. Well I disagree with them 100%. I did get bigger in some areas. My arms never really had a defined muscle…it does now and is larger in diameter! My back got a ton of results, and is of course is wider, and when I flex the muscles make it “bigger”.
I think it all depends on what you want to accomplish. I personally don’t think that your going to get arms like the one in the picture above by doing P90X. Let’s refer to that picture as “a body builder look” from now on. I don’t think your going to get “a body builder look” from P90X. Don’t get me wrong though, you will get amazing results and get ripped if thats what you want, but P90X isn’t designed to give you 30″ bisects. It’s really designed to help you shred fat, and define muscle or get ripped as most like to call it. Now for the ladies reading this post, don’t let that scare you off. P90X has 3 different versions that you or the males can do.
P90X Classic – This is your “Classic” or most popular version. It’s designed to help you lose weight, shred fat, build and define muscle and get ripped.
P90X Lean – This is what a lot of the ladies that I know like to do. This version is less weights (but still some) and more cardio to help you lose weight, burn fat, define muscle and yes get ripped.
P90X Doubles – This is for someone serious about working out! You workout 2 times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I think this was built more for athletes to train by. It’s not for beginners to the program! But anyone who is in shape and has the stamina can do it!
Of course these versions are all in the P90X program, they are just different workouts each day to help you achieve your goals. P90X also comes with a Workout Calendar, P90X Guide and the P90X Nutrition Guide to help you with your journey, whether it’s to slim down or ad some definition and muscle.
In conclusion will P90X make me bigger? Yes. But remember, not like a super bulky body builder. If you follow the P90X guide, you can obtain the results you want. You’ve just got to “Bring IT!” Are you ready?

You better believe it! But have no fear, it will go away. Remember if it were easy, everyone would already be in shape! Great results are worth working for!
I have done P90X for about 6 or 7 rounds. I’ve done most all the Insanity workouts, TurboFire, Insanity The Asylum and P90X2.
In the beginning of this year (2012), I did P90X2 for for 90 days (I did skip the recovery weeks because they were optional, so it was more like 70 days) and 30 days of Insanity the Asylum. They are very different workouts and target different things. So I felt like I needed to do the P90X/Insanity Hybrid again. P90X to me personally, is the best workout Beachbody has put out. (Just my opinion) It just simply works when used effectively. The first workout is Chest & Back & abs. Now Im in pretty dang good shape. (If you want to see my results, check out my video on the right side of this page). Insainity The Asylum has my cardio at its max so Im good there. I was surprised that I could still do the same amount of pushups that I did when I finished the last round of P90X just before new years. However, man-o-man am I sore. I honestly forgot what it felt like. I think it was a good idea to mix in X2 and ITA, to let my body take a break from my normal routine of P90X. Like I said my body is where I want it to be right now, so Im really anxious to see the results Im going to get this time with P90X.
I will say that as I was doing day 3 of P90X, Shoulders and Arms and AbRipper, I could hardly stretch out, because my chest was soooo sore from all the pushups on Day 1. But as a coach, I knew that there were no excuses, and that I had to ‘Walk the Walk, if I was going to Talk the Talk”! I quickly remembered that as you get momentum the soreness kind of gets put on pause. It just goes away. You can’t let your mind tell you “oh its gonna hurt so do less weight, or your already sore, don’t push to hard” you have to fight through the soreness. I know it sounds crazy but the harder you work when your sore, the faster it goes away, at least it does for me.
So if I can sum it up for you. Don’t put things off because of mental fear. Don’t let your mind stop your body. Believe in yourself and just do it. Your body will follow your mind! Also like I said, P90X is my favorite, but I see the importance of rotating all of Beachody’s workouts. You’ll just continue to get better and better results each time. You can’t alway do the same workout, even though P90X confuses the muscle each day/week. You need to let your body rest from routines, and mentally challenge yourself with other workouts, even if it’s just for 30 days.

Why am I gaining weight while doing Shaun T’s Insanity? Aren’t I supposed to lose weight with Insanity?
I keep getting this question right around the week 2 or week 3 mark for people doing Insanity. So did some digging to see what kind of information I could find. Low and behold I found a great post by Chalene Johnson, creator of TurboJam, TurboFire, ChaLEAN Extreme and many other fitness programs. Chalene is talking about Chalene Extreme but what she talks about will apply when starting any new work out regiment.
Here is her take on the subject.
“Probably the most common question I get when I release a new exercise program is, “Help! I’m gaining weight! Am I doing something wrong?” This is a common phenomenon with any new exercise program, Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Hustle, you name it! It’s especially common (and temporary) with intense strength training programs like ChaLEAN Extreme or Tony Horton’s P90X.
The motivation to start a new exercise program is almost always to lose weight loss. However, what most personal trainers know and most at-home exercisers do not, is that a new exercise program often can cause an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale. (Notice I didn’t say weight gain! I’ll explain.) This common increase in the scale is also the reason why perhaps millions of people start and then quickly quit their resolution to get fit.
The temporary weight gain explained:
When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and “unfamiliar” the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to
“protect and defend” the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.
This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen with fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of water retention and slight swelling.
Most people are motivated enough to put up with this temporary muscle soreness. Yet, many, especially those who really need immediate weight loss to keep them motivated in those first couple of weeks become discouraged and quit!
When I worked with a group of 70 test participants during the development stages of ChaLEAN Extreme, this happened. Who was the most upset and discouraged? You guessed it… the women! I’m happy to report with absolutely every single woman (and man) in our group, the weight increase was temporary and never lasted more than 2 weeks before they started to see a major drop in the scale. However, these people had the advantage of working with someone who was able to explain to them why this was happening and assure them the weight would come off if they stuck to the nutrition plan and stayed true to the program.
For those of you who are following the ChaLEAN Extreme phase plan, keep in mind that when you start each phase, your body will be “in shock” again. Don’t be surprised or discouraged if you experience a temporary gain on the scale the first week of each phase.
My own personal example of this is running 10K’s. I don’t do it very often, maybe 1 or 2x a year. Even though I run on a regular basis, when you run a race you push much harder. It’s natural for me to be “insanely” sore the next day. Its also very common for me to see the scale jump 4 pounds the next day from forcing fluids post race and the resulting DOMS. Even though I know the cause of it, it’s still a bummer. We’re all human and hard work should mean “results”. Hard work equals results, but our bodies are amazing machines and they know how to protect us from hurting our selves. Soreness forces you to give those muscles a break Ultimately you will lose the weight and you will change your metabolism in the process.
The key is understanding that this is a normal and temporary and stick with the program!!
When to be concerned:
If you experience a significant weight gain (exceeding 5 pounds) which does not begin to decrease rapidly after the second week, guess what it is??? I’ll give you one hint… you put it in your mouth and chew it. You know it! Your food (or calorie laden beverages). Newsflash friends.. exercise doesn’t make you gain weight. Consuming more food than you burn makes you gain weight!
So if after two weeks you are not losing weight, have gained weight that’s not coming off, it’s time to take a close and honest look at your food intake. It’s time to find out what you’re burning in calories each day. Have your RMR or BMR tested. This can be done for less than $50 and the information is invaluable. It takes out the guess work. Google “hydrostatic body fat testing _______ ” and insert the name of the big city you’re closest too. Companies that do HBFT also do BMR testing. Knowledge is king.
I’m gaining weight, but I’m sure it’s muscle:
Possibly, but if you’re following ChaLEAN Extreme correctly, you should be losing fat and gaining muscle and the fat loss should be much more substantial than the rate at which you can physically put on muscle. This is even true for they guys. Of the 70 plus people in my test group, every single one of them lost body fat and gained muscle and not one of them gained weight. I believe the average weight loss after 4 months was 28 pounds with many people losing 40 plus pounds. Even the men, who as you can see put on a lot of muscle, were seeing huge drops in the scale. We tested their muscle composition at the beginning and at the end and 100% of the participants maintained or gained muscle while achieving substantial weight loss. That’s the key to keeping weight off long term, i.e. muscle. Muscle burns fat. But you’ve heard me say that before.
Moral of the story:
Be patient. You’ll get the results you want, if you stick to it!
I hope this helps you understand why you might be gaining weight with Shaun T’s Insanity or any work out program for that matter. Stick with it and your results will come. Your body will thank you!
